- Super day! Started with a Cowboy breakfast served on metal plates & traveled on bus tour to Mt. Rushmore! Fabulous weather, wonderful bus companions, and a majestic sight! George, Tom, Teddy, and Abe did not disappoint! I had TJ Vanilla ice cream made using Jefferson’s original recipe—which they sold on laminated cards which ,of course, I purchased! Next, we drove through the Black Hills, named Black because of the Ponderosa pines which look dark from a distance . We drove on narrow , winding roads complete with pigtail bridges and tunnels —-an 8 ft. wide bus going through an 8.5 ft tunnel is not good for the nerves! The Needles and Cathedral were incredible rock formations at 6,000 ft and were formed when lava cooled underwater millions of years ago! Saw Bison, pronghorn sheep, donkeys, goats, and mountain beavers throughout the hills. We had buffalo stew for lunch at the Custer Game Lodge—-delicious! Crazy Horse Memorial was our next stop. Only his face has been completed and unfortunately, it will not be finished in my lifetime. Hard work blasting through all that granite! Ended the day at the Chuckwagon dinner show . When the director saw we were from Boston, he took us outside pointing out Adam Vinatieri’s summer house across the highway! Dinner meant more metal plates and cups! Entertainment was phenomenal complete with audience singin’ and clappin’! Tony is definitely in cowboy mode! Onto Gardiner, MT tomorrow!
